Tips for Sticking to your New Year's Resolutions

Year after year we make resolutions on January 1 to give ourselves a fresh new start to the 365 days ahead.  Only a select few stay true to their course as the rest of us resume bad habits within a matter of weeks: but why are some successful and others not, when we all set out with the same great intentions at the beginning of each new year?

The following resolution tips have been compiled from personal experience as to what has been successful for our panel of hardcore “New Year Resolutioners” as they address their most common resolutions:  weight loss, fitness, and quitting a plethora of bad or unhealthy habits!

Feel Inspired. Get Motivated.

Inspiration is key for setting any life-altering goal, whether it falls at New Year or not!  Some get it from their “skinny clothes” or maybe even a photograph; others might get it from an experience. For example, a smoker friend of mine came to terms with the unappealing side effects of her habit when a child in the same elevator innocently commented to her mother on how my friend smelled.  The experience had such an impact on her that she resolved to quit that very moment.

It is also important to set motivational check points for yourself which will assist you in maintaining your focus.

For example if you are committed to dropping a few pounds, weigh yourself in the mornings to remind yourself of your goal and progress; reiterate your goal out loud in the mornings to yourself in the mirror; treat yourself to a new piece of clothing, one size down, and try it on regularly to remind yourself what you have to look forward to when you reach your goal; take before photographs of yourself  and refer to them throughout your journey – if you are committed to your goal, these checkpoints will work!

Although some might find it unappealing, it is a proven fact that physical activity is healthy for your mind, body and soul.  If your goal is to lose weight, physical activity will boost your metabolism and get you there even faster.  If you are trying to give up smoking, or chocolate, or calling your old boyfriend (!) – getting out for a brisk walk, a workout, or just slipping in an exercise DVD at home, will clear your focus and ease your craving.

Most importantly, exercise keeps the heart and bones healthy, so get out there!  It's in your best interest!

So many of us forget one very realistic point when is comes to weight loss:  we didn't gain the pounds over night, so we aren't going to lose them over night.

Slow and steady weight loss through healthy eating, portion control, and increased activity are the healthiest and most permanent ways to drop extra pounds.

The market is literally crammed with healthy lifestyle plans, each with its own unique system, but all with a unified message:  eat right and stay fit for a long and healthy life.

Since we are on the subject of a healthy lifestyle, why not make a resolution for yourself with regards to your kids:  teach them good lifestyle choices and get them active.

The value and effect of video games on kids lives have long been questioned for their violent content and hours of couch time, so we were all pleasantly surprised when manufacturers produced games that required physical activity!

Nintendo Wii is a great example of how video games can get your kids active – now they can play tennis, retrace dance routines, or even play a guitar solo!
